When can you start dog potty training?  Your dog starts learning at the very moment you first meet him as your puppy.  It is easiest for you to do the training while he is still a young puppy.  As he becomes older, he will least likely to mess in the home by undergoing puppy potty training.

It is best to remember staying totally consistent and calm at all times with your techniques.  Timing is your key to success.  After taking in food or water, puppies pee or poop out within 15 or 20 minutes.  For that moment, take him where you want him to be.

Feed him or give him water only when you can take him outside immediately.  Feeding at regular times should be established.  It does not work if other than his regular meal times, he is allowed to feed.  This feeding pattern helps to start his natural toilet pattern also.   Your puppy drinks more than usual in warm, hot or dry weather or climate.  Provide him access to fresh water and to his toilet area more frequently.

As soon as possible, establish good habits without expecting immediate results.  A toilet area must be decided for him.  You have to stay with him outside until he’s done, at least once every hour at the start of training.   Never leave him alone outside.  Your puppy must be able to distinguish an acceptable are especially if it is a home toilet area.  It should not resemble the flooring.

Never yell or punish him physically if he does pee or poop where you don’t want him to.  You must realize that it is not time to talk to him about it.  Just quietly clean it up and ignore him.

It is not always fun to do potty training, particularly the waiting for him to go.  As you are building a relationship while teaching him his first lessons, keep him with you as much as possible when you are both at home. Whether it means being at your side, in a confined area, in a crate or just nearby, be sure that you are not distracted from watching him every moment.  Be patient as you take time to consider how the world must be for him.

The fun of being outside ends abruptly if you take him back inside the house right away when he is done.  When he succeeds in your dog potty training, give him lots of praise.

Collies come in two different varieties, ‘smooth’ and ‘rough.’ Rough collies require much more grooming, but smoothes do need to be groomed regularly to keep their coats healthy. Collies have a double coat of hair, meaning there is a thick undercoat and an outer coat of thinner and flatter hair.

A smooth collie has shorter hair like that of a Labrador or Dalmatian. The hair is short and smooth with a thick undercoat. Rough collies have a long and flowing topcoat and a dense undercoat. You can keep your collie looking good, no matter what the variety, with regular brushing.

You’ll need a pin brush, a slicker brush, a comb, scissors and a spray bottle filled with a conditioner spray. You can buy a commercial conditioner spray, or make your own using 1 to 2 tablespoons of dog conditioner diluted with water. Make sure it is diluted well or the spray will make your Collie’s coat greasy.

Make sure to spray your dog’s hair thoroughly before you start to brush. Never brush a Collie’s coat dry because it will break their hair. If you have a rough collie, part the dog’s hair and brush from the roots out. The pin brush can be used if your dog is not shedding and is free of matting.

The slicker brush and comb are helpful for shedding dogs and for removing mats. If a mat cannot be brushed out of the Collie’s hair, you can cut it out. Collies most often have matted hair behind their ears, underneath the front legs and on their underbelly so make sure to check those areas carefully. For a smooth collie, a slicker brush will suffice for both the undercoat and outer coat.

You should brush your collie everyday during shedding seasons, and at least once a week when they are not shedding. Regular brushing is important to remove the dead hair. If left alone, the dead hair will cause hot spots on your dog’s skin.

Collies generally do not require all over trimming, but you might want to keep their feet trimmed. With a small pair of scissors, carefully trim the hair around each footpad.

This will keep your collie’s feet clean. While you are working with your collie’s feet, you can also trim the nails. This should be done every 1 to 2 weeks to keep the nails from getting too long.

If your collie is a puppy, you can train them to be used to a Dremel tool with a sandpaper attachment. Apply light pressure with the Dremel and grind down to just before the pink quick.

The alternative to using the Dremel is to use a standard dog nail trimmer. Before you clip the dog’s nails, find the pink quick and cut just before that point. Cutting into the quick will make the dog’s nail bleed. If this happens, styptic powder is helpful to have on hand to stop the bleeding.

Finally, remember to clean your Collie’s ears about once a week. You can purchase a canine ear cleaner at any pet store. Squirt the ear cleaner into your dog’s ear canal and then rub the base of the ear. This will help the ear cleaner coat the inside of the ear canal. You can use a cotton ball to remove the excess cleaner and then allow the ear canal to dry naturally.

Perhaps the most popular pet in the world is the dog. Regarded as man’s best friend, almost all households like to have it as a pet. You might also have a dog at home… they are great companions right? Because of the high demands for dogs, dog breeders are now in serious business. Dog breeding should be given much attention because it is a very challenging venture.

At present, there are already strict regulations that pet owners should follow if they don’t want to be penalized. Adoption of dogs and other pets is a bit difficult because you need to fill out a long form. By simply answering the questionnaire, your background is already checked. If you want to become one of the best dog breeders in your area, you should strictly follow all the pet regulations. This is one way to keep your business in perfect shape.

If you love challenge, start dog breeding. Whatever your reasons are, you may be able to succeed if you know exactly what to do. Are you aware that many dogs have suffered from their breeders? This is true and it is still happening nowadays. You should be different from those cruel dog breeders because you can also make money in dog breeding by being a patient and good breeder.

Do you know the laws which govern dog breeding? If you don’t know yet, try to find out about it; by knowing the laws, you can’t go wrong. You can also breed dogs without being actually in the business; you see, some individuals breed dogs to add more pets at home or they can give it as gifts to special individuals.

You must be aware that dog breeding can take some time. By exerting your effort, you can have many puppies in the future. Firstly, you need to get a pair or dogs – a male and a female. Choose the perfect breed of dogs so that you can have cute puppies in a matter of months.

Talk to a pro breeder so that you will find out about the various dog cycles. Breeding requires perfect timing. You must be able to time the breeding for success. You must have adequate knowledge about dog breeding. Dogs are great for pets but if you’re cruel to them, you have no right to own one. As a dog owner, you already know how to take care of dogs properly. You should get them a kennel but you should also provide ample time for them to play around unchained. Feeding at the right time is also important as well as grooming. You will also do these things once you decide to breed dogs. But there are additional responsibilities that come along with it.

You need to get a vet because the dogs need regular check up especially the female. Have the dogs checked to determine if they are in perfect condition. You should also know when it’s finally time to get keep them together in a safe area. The female dog shows willingness to mate when it’s hot but this may take time. Study the behavior of your dogs and you can learn a lot from them. Good luck with your dog breeding.

Indoor potty training is the way to go if you have a dachshund puppy. This is true for miniature dachshund puppies as well as for those of the standard variety. I love dachshunds in general but am partial to the miniature dachshund. This article is primarily meant for those who have a single dachshund puppy.

Indoor training will spare you some of the unpleasantries of having a dachshund that must go outside. Who wants to get up at 5 AM in the morning, when it is rainy or cold or, when you are watching a great movie? It is also better on the dachshund’s bowels and bladder if they can go potty anytime they want.

Start the potty training as soon as possible once you get your new best friend home. Dachshund puppies are quite small so even if they do make a mess it is no big deal. However, having them make a mess on a hard floor is preferable as it is much easier to clean than if they go on carpet. For the first few days you have your doxie at home, I suggest you have them mostly contained to a room with a hard floor…like in a bathroom. Don’t worry, you can get them out to play and can go into their area to spend as much time with them as you wish. I suggest having some Nature’s Miracle around when a mess on the carpet (it will happen) does occur. You will be amazed at the power and efficiency of this product.

Place everything your dachshund puppy needs in the contained area i.e. their bed, food and, potty. If you are lucky, the breeder has already initiated the paper training which will make it easier for you and your dachshund puppy. Start the puppy’s training off on some newspaper. If and when they make a mess on the floor put a little of the pee or poop on the newspaper or preferably between a few pieces of newspaper. They will smell this and will begin to associate this as the place for them to do their business. Some people utilize wee wee pads but I never did.

Very gently chastise your dachshund puppy when they don’t perform well; they will feel the disappointment in your voice. Never yell at them as they are incredibly sensitive and will be very hurt. They very much want to please you! Do not praise them or give them a treat when they make a mistake. Just keep working with them and your dachshund puppy will soon get it right. When they do get it right praise them and give them a treat. Your puppy will be so happy! It won’t be long until they start getting it right most of the time! You will develop your own little system as times goes by.

One purpose of this article is to spare you some of the mistakes I’ve made over the years. My mini dachshund (Charlie) is almost 12 years old and I have experimented with several indoor potty techniques over the years. I started off with newspaper (paper training) but as your dachshund puppy grows, you will tire of them stepping in their own urine, transferring urine or, having the urine drain off the newspaper onto the floor.

Dachshunds have a quirk where if their front paws are on the paper they think their entire body is on the paper. This causes a number of near misses…especially since their body is long like a hot dog. Improvement was made when I placed a plastic hallway runner under the newspaper. At some point, I then purchased a large litter box and then placed newspaper in that and a hallway runner under the litter box.

You will so love your dachshund puppy that messes won’t matter much. However, as years go by, the messes have a way of growing on you. Once Charlie got into his 10th year or so I started to get quite tired of dealing with the messes. It is a labor of love however and unavoidable.

Just recently, I discovered and purchased a Wizdog Indoor Potty System. How I wish I had discovered this years ago! Wizdog consists of a large plastic pan with a separate plastic grate on top. You place newspaper in the bottom of the device. The dog does it’s business on top of the grate and the urine falls into the tray below. No more wet footprints or urine on the floor. The poop is easy to clean off the top of the grate. This is so much better than the intermediate steps I went through over the years. Charlie is taking to this upgrade well—messes transferred to the floor have decreased dramatically. I’m happier now too as the messes are more contained and much easier to clean. Itchy skin, hair loss, constant scratching, ear and anal gland problems are the most common indicators of a dog skin problem.

Although there are many canine skin disorders, the 5 following tips will help to identify some of the more common dog skin problems.

1. Fleas: The best way to identify a flea problem is to check your pets belly area and along the inside of the back legs. The hair is thinner in this area and easier to spot both fleas and flea dirt. The flea itself is brown or copper colored and roughly the size of a pin-head. Flea dirt looks like sprinkled pepper. Ruffling the fur on your dog’s back and along the base of the tail is also an easy way to find fleas and flea droppings. Often times dogs that develop Flea Allergy Dermatitis will show hair loss around the base (top) of the tail. There are many options available for flea and tick control.

2. Food Allergy Dermatitis: Although food allergies can appear in pups as early on as 5 or 6 months, they can also develop in adult dogs as late as 11 or 12 years old. Common symptoms of food allergy dermatitis are itching of the skin, excessive scratching, hot spots and even skin infections. Dog owners should realize that there is a distinct difference between Food Allergies and Food Intolerance. Like people, classic symptoms of a food intolerance would be an upset stomach and diarrhea. All foods do not agree with all dogs. Pink Bismuth is a safe remedy for stomach upset and diarrhea in dogs. Food allergies require slowly eliminating foods and changing the diet.

3. Atopic Dermatitis: A condition caused by environmental allergens. Dogs that suffer with airborne allergies will often rub their face along the side of a sofa or along the carpet. As with food allergies, dogs will also chew their feet. With Atopic Dermatitis, it’s common for dogs to develop ear infections due to a yeast overgrowth. Pollen, trees, grass, dust and wool fabric are just a few common airborne allergens that some dogs are sensitive to. Antihistimines are often prescribed.

4. Acral Lick Dermatitis (Lick Granuloma): This raised lesion will be red, hairless and is usually found on the leg of the dog. This neurological condition is self-induced due to continuous licking. Possible causes include anxiety, boredom and stress. Treatment will include identifying the source of the problem (anxiety, etc.), restricting licking of the area and often times medication for behavioral modification.

5. Hot Spots: Medically referred to as Acute Moist Dermatitis, these round lesions generally appear in warmer weather. Along the hip, the sides of the chest and around the head area are the most common locations for hot spots. These moist and hairless inflammations are painful causing the dog to fixate on the particular spot by licking, chewing and scratching at it. Continuous licking in one area is a large factor in the development of hot spots. These lesions can quickly become very large in size. The location of the hot spot will help determine what the underlying problem could be an; anal gland problem, ear problem or a flea problem. A Veterinarian will clip the hair around the spot, clean it with a medicated solution, prescribe antibiotics and pain medicine.

Determining the source of many dog skin problems can be difficult. Skin conditions can be uncomfortable and painful, so dog owners should not give up until they know where the problem stems from.
