I used to wonder curiously about clicker obedience training for dogs. But then, my neighbor said that clickers are not meant for obedience training and they are only fit for making a dog perform circus-like tricks and stunts.

At first, I agreed with my neighbor. Those clickers seemed annoying to me and I didn’t believe that anyone would be able to teach obedience training commands to their dogs with that constant clicking sound.

I couldn’t be more wrong!

Listen, one day I was browsing a video site and this clicker obedience training video caught my attention. It was really well-shot, unlike some of those flimsy homemade clicker videos you often see on the web.

The 3 “super trainer” tips that helped me the most during training are:

Tip 1 – To clicker train your dog effectively, you need to employ a large variety of positive reinforcers. This means you should allow your dog to play with several different toys/object. The same goes for treats. Use many different ones for better end result.

Tip 2 – High clicking rate is crucial during the first few training sessions. Make sure your dog is able to earn a single click at a rate of every 3 – 5 seconds. This method works really well when I first conducted a clicker crate training session with Brylow.

Tip 3 – Minimize sloppy training. This means you should avoid the following during clicker obedience training: bending over your dog, repeated cues, nagging, and luring.

A horse can be regarded as more than an animal to ride, more than a hobby. A horse owner can love that animal as easily as he can love a dog. The main reason for purchasing a horse is to ride but the horse/human relationship is much more than that. When a small child looks up and says, "Your horse is beautiful" the horse owner is filled with pride.

When a horse is well trained and accustomed to working "with" the rider it’s almost as if the two are merged during riding. There is no better example of this than a "cow pony" (also called a cutting horse) which is a horse trained to follow, chase and cut a cow from the herd. The need for a horse to perform this duty dates back to the days when range cattle were branded and herds turned loose to roam without benefit of fences. Each rancher used his own brand as a method of recognizing which cattle he owned. During a cutting horse competition, the cowboy can guide his horse without touching the reins. The shifting of the rider’s body weight in the saddle tells the horse what direction to take. The perfect communication between the two is amazing to witness.

Watching these competitions makes for a great spectator sport.

People watching can be an interesting pastime. Observing a herd of horses in a pasture is just as interesting in the sense that each has an individual personality just like people. In a herd of ten you might see two laying down, another two might be fighting with each other. A fight can be anything from nipping at each other to rearing up and lunging. If one horse approaches from behind, the horse who is crowded might kick out with one hind leg and sometimes both.

The remaining horses might turn to observe or simply continue grazing. Some will never fight even if provoked. Others seem to enjoy being disagreeable. When a horse lays its ears back it indicates anger against another horse and may result in a bite or a kick.

Every horse owner smiles when offering an apple or carrot as a treat. The warm muzzle and the soft whinny as the animal takes the treat from the open hand is a bonding moment. Petting the side of a horse’s nose is like touching velvet.

Beagles are more successful at tracking a scent from the ground than they are from an arbitrary place in the air, but they still excel at both skills. Most beagles can even track scents across water. It’s very hard to outsmart a beagle when he has a good whiff of a subjects scent.

The Beagle’s excessively effective sense of smell is a huge benefit and asset to a working dog, but can turn into a significant obstacle when dealing with a household pet. With such accurate noses, the Beagle will always know when you are eating and what you are eating, or if there is something they might want to get at inside the garbage can! This can be difficult to deal with, being that Beagles are notoriously food-motivated animals. The easiest way to counteract this behavior is to train against garbage digging or begging for people food, starting from puppyhood. If your dog knows he will never get to eat the bacon he smells on your breath, he will be less likely to go digging for the wrapper in your trash bin.

Another problem with household pet Beagles and their sense of sent is their innate desire to always track a smell that makes them curious. If you live in a rural area, this can mean your dog wandering miles away in search of a rabbit that could have bounced through your back yard two days ago. Invisible fences or shock collars are virtually useless against Beagles, as they just don’t care about something giving them a light shock when they are following something they could eat, play with, or even just follow!

Bring a puppy home can very exciting for the whole family. Children are especially thrilled to have a puppy in the house and would to spend so much type fussing over the puppy. If your kids love to spend a lot of time with your new puppy, you might as well teach them to take care of the puppy and to feed it.
