The cats that we know today have a long history dating back millions of years. Paleontologists discovered evidence of a cat with a retractable claw, Miacis, who lived about 50 million years ago. Most scientists believe that the descendants of Miacis and other prehistoric cats divided into three separate groups nearly a million years ago; the big cats (lions and tigers), the cheetahs, and the small cats (ocelots, bobcats and lynxes).

Cats come in many shapes and sizes, but the fur coat found on each feline is a big part of how they are classified. They usually fall somewhere in the categories of long-haired, short-haired, or “hairless”. Long-haired breeds include Persian, Himalayan, Maine coon, Norwegian Forest Cat and Ragdoll. Short-haired breeds include American Shorthair, American Wirehair, Siamese, Burmese, Korat and Singapore. “Hairless” cats, such as Sphinx, merely appear to be hairless. The breed actually does have a thin layer of hair covering its body.

Cats first started living with people approximately 6,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian farmers domesticated the African wildcats, Felis hybica, a natural hunter, to keep grain storage areas rodent free. Egyptians worshipped Bast, or Bastet, the cat goddess of fertility, happiness and the moon. Impressed with the cat’s natural beauty, Egyptian artists painted and sculpted them, making them cultural icons.

Although ancient Egyptians are known for their love of cats, they are not the only people who worshipped them. In Thailand, Siamese cats were sacred temple cats. In Japan, thse animals kept Buddhist temples free of mice. In Norwegian mythology, Freya (the goddess of fertility) rode in a chariot pulled by two white cats. Cats made their way to China in 5,000 BCE and to India in 100 BCE.

Throughout history, sailors and other explorers helped spread cats across the world. They realized that keeping them abroad their ships was a good way to rid their living quarters of mice. In time, it was considered lucky to keep cats on board.

When cats came to Europe in 900 BCE, they crossbred with native cat found in the British Isles, Felis silvestris. By the middle Ages, however, cats fell out of favor with most of Europe. The Catholic Church connected them and those who loved them with paganism, devil worship, and witchcraft. Superstitious people believed that cats (especially black cats) had diabolical powers. They were feared because of their nocturnal hunting habits, their ability to see in the dark and their “glowing” eyes.

In 1484, Pope Innocent empowered the Inquisition to burn all cats and cat lovers. As a result of the drastic drop in the cat population, the number of rodents increased. Millions of rats carrying fleas infected with bubonic plague spread the Black Death across Europe. When the persecution of cats ended, they began hunting rats again, and Europeans saw the advantage of having these natural hunters keep their towns’ rodent free.

In Victorian times, they were once again warmly welcomed into the home and were seen as loving companions’ pets. Victorian cats impressed artists, writers, scientists, and philosophers of the day. Queen Victoria loved cats, and because of this. Their good reputation was reaffirmed; there it remains to this day.

postheadericon You have to know that even your pet needs dental care

You have to know that even your pet needs dental care. Without it your pet can get ill. If you consider that brushing your cat teeth is too hard you could ask for a veterinary’s advice. Else, you can start doing it. After all it is not too hard and you can get used to it.

You have to take your cat to a yearly dental check and even a dental cleaning from time to time.

Until the dental cleaning you have to check your cat’s teeth periodically. If you do it every day your cat will get used to teeth brushing faster. In this way you will protect your cat from getting a dental infection.

Start cleaning your cat’s teeth and ums when it is at an early age. This way your cat will get use to is faster. You can also rub her teeth and gums with gauze wrapped around your finger. Later you can start to use special toothpaste and toothbrush. However, you should never use regular toothpaste because you will only damage her gums.

Massage your cat’s gums regularly. Cats don’t usually get cavities instead they get gum illness which leads to bad breath and in the end to the loss of teeth.

If your cat losses her appetite than you should know that gum illness could be the cause. Same like humans, cats lose their appetite if they have a dental infection.

Unexpectedly, cats that live indoors have a bigger chance to get a dental infection than those who mostly live outside.  This is because the cats that live outside can eat grass which is a natural dental floss. Another explanation is that indoor cats can’t eat small animals therefore they don’t eat bones that are a very powerful tooth cleaner.

Try to include some dry food in your cat’s diet. It will prove very helpful for her teeth and gums.

To conclude:

•    It is always better to prevent a disease than to cure it. Therefore massage your cat’s gums periodically.

•    Don’t brush your cat’s teeth with human toothpaste. You can get cat toothpaste from a pet shop.

•    Always ask advices from a vet concerning your cat’s dental health.

The boxer was bread from the English bulldog and is now part of the Molosser group, which used to be the Bullenbeisser which is now extinct. Boxers have broad yet short skulls, as well as a square muzzle with an under bit. They have very powerful jaws which allow them to hang on to their prey.

Boxers were first discovered at a dog show back in Munich in the year 1895. According the American Kennel Club, boxers dogs are now the sixth most popular dog in the United States for the second year in a row. They used to be the seventh most popular dog dating back from 2002. There are approximately 33,550 new dogs resisted every year.

Boxer Descriptions.

Boxer dogs have the most unique feature as the head is very distinctive. Boxers were originally a “docked and cropped” breed. This is somewhat banned in the United States as many animal rights groups as well as the general public have banned this technique. The do still cut their tails but the crop of the ears has died down. Adult boxer dogs can usually weight between 55 to 70 pounds. Adult’s males are usually a lot taller and weigh more than females. Males can be any where from 22 to 25 inches tall, as females are about 21 to 23 inches. Boxers will either be fawn colored or brindle colored or they can be almost all white. Many boxers have white patches throughout their bodies.

Boxers have extremely shot hair with shiny smooth coat that is extremely tight to their bodies. Boxers can only be bathed once or twice a month to since their hair is so short. Each boxer is unique in its own personal way. .

The Boa Constrictor, an in particular the Common Boa (Boa constrictor imperator) is a popular snake amongst herpetoculturists. The common boa has a long lifespan, capable of reaching more than 30 years in captivity, so is a very long term commitment. They require specific heating and housing, but if cared for properly they make excellent pets. Here is a boa care sheet explaining the basic care requirements of these extraordinary snakes.

Size: Adult boas can easily reach 8-10 feet in length, which means that you need to provide a substantial enclosure. A vivarium of 72x24x24 inches is ideal for adult boa constrictors.

Food: Boa constrictors are nocturnal hunters. In their natural habitat they feed on small mammals and little rodents. Lizards, birds and bats also common prey, but in captivity there is no need to provide such a varied diet. Mice for juvenile boas and bigger rodents and rabbits for adults make a perfect and easy to provide diet. The boa needs one prey every ten to fifteen days when it is adult and one per week as a neonate.

New born boas will start on pinkie or fuzzy mice, and the prey size should be increased as your boa grows, but in any case you need to remember that the size of the prey should not exceed the size of the widest part of the snake. Overfeeding, or ‘power feeding’, to increase growth rate should be avoided. While this can increase the snake’s growth rate, but it will significantly reduce its lifespan. Boas are prone to obesity in captivity so care should be taken to limit the amount and size of prey items offered.

You should also keep in mind that as with all snake the common boa needs fresh water. It is essential to provide fresh and clean water on a daily basis.

Substrates: Many people tend to place wooden substrates in the snake’s vivarium, considering them to be close to the natural ambiance. These however are prone to harboring parasites such as ticks and mites, are difficult to clean, and can lead to digestive problems if ingested. A much better solution is to use paper towels or newspapers which can be quickly and easily changed at little or no cost. A solid brand should also be provided as many boas will climb if given the chance.

Handling: Avoid handling newly acquired boas for a few days to allow them to get used to their new surroundings. Once settled in, begin handling for just a few minutes at a time and slowly your boa will become quite tolerant and docile. Most adult boa constrictors are easy to handle, slow moving, and unlikely to bite. They are however large and strong, so always be aware that they are potentially a dangerous animal. When handling a large boa always ensure that a second person is nearby as a safety precaution.

The top dog training research indicates that when beginning the training process, it is best to use methods based on positive reinforcement.  This will motivate your dog to decide whether to follow your instructions rather than doing them out of fright or evasion.  Educating your dog with the lasting power of love, compassion and respect will produce a deeper bond with your dog and family.  Positive training techniques are the most effective way to teach your dog to obey your commands and signals.  Rewarding your dog for doing something good and teaching them right from wrong while not punishing them is a prime example of this.  Owners must realize that the dog is doing what comes naturally and the one training the dog at fault for perhaps using an incorrect method, or not making sure the dog is comprehending every piece of information they are trying to get through to them.

Since your dog will be encountering a vast amount of people, places, and things, positive reinforcement will ensure that your dog is a great role model for all other dogs.  This will make socializing with other people and dogs a great experience for both dog and owner.

Consistency and repetition is the main means in which dogs learn new things so all family members should consistently greet the fore mentioned dog the same way to ensure proper behavior.  This same approach should be taken when using verbal commands and while using hand signals to ensure that the behavior is being reinforced.

Another great way for your dog to learn is to train them during play time.  This positive and fun atmosphere is great for teaching commands and basic training techniques, especially when you can involve your children.

The final thing that is a necessity when training your pup is having an adequate chew toy.  Every dog needs to chew so make sure they have a toy, or else they will find a nice newspaper or pair of slippers.  Dogs love toys that have the ability for food or treats placed inside them, these type of toys are the optimal type for every young or adolescent dog.  These simple steps can turn your dog from nightmare to dream dog!  Good luck and happy training!
