Among the animals of equal or greater strength, the horse is the most useful to man because of its superior nervous development. In fact, it has almost perfect control of its muscles and bones.

This perfect control gives horses instant response to any outside stimulus. For example, if you strike a horse with a whip you get an immediate action of some kind, which depends on the breed of horse.

It is because of this highly developed nervous organization that the horse has displaced all other animals who are able to carry heavy loads among civilized people.

But here’s a common problem:

The horse is often given credit for more intelligence than he deserves. Many would even place him on a level of reason with the man. Perhaps this is because of the demeanor of most horses, but it is a fallacy.

Now don’t get me wrong. Horses aren’t Stupid, but THE HORSE CANNOT REASON. It may be able to act on how you touch it, or speak to it, but this is a learned response after you spend many hours with your horse. If you notice at first, these interactions do not have the desired response with your horse, and it is only with firm interaction that they learn the meaning you intend.

I make this statement, not merely as a theory, but as a fact based upon more than twenty years of close observation and contact with many thousands of horses.

In the area of intelligence and reason, there is a vast gulf between man and horse – a gulf so wide that no horse will most likely ever cross it. You need to understand that horses look smart, but need time to learn what we are intending, and take that into account if you want to be effective in training your animal!

Since the horse cannot talk and does not understand what you say, you will have to make your wants known to him in the first place through the sense of touch. Later this method of communication will be merged into that of voice and motions. As for instance, a touch of the whip will mean at first “Go on”; later a motion of the whip will have the same effect, and at last the word “Get-up” will mean the same thing.

When you talk to the horse through the sense of touch, take into consideration the nervous organization. To some horses a sharp stroke of the whip may be very cruel, because of the extreme sensitiveness of their nerves, or being thin skinned as many term it, when to another horse the same stroke would only attract attention.

Watch your horse closely so that you may know and act accordingly. You cannot train a horse and put only half your attention to your work. Be alert and keen, ready to take advantage of any sign of submission or wilfulness.

Pet owner Julie Stern Fukuhara, of Palo, Alto, CA, said her dog Turbo (a “Puggle” who is a crossbreed between a Pug and a Beagle) began acting strangely one evening.

“He was walking a little wobbly,” she said of her floppy-eared-pooch.

Although she was initially worried about Turbo, Julie knew if she had to take him to the vet, she wouldn’t have to agonize over finances because she had pet insurance for Turbo through Pets Best Insurance.

When the dog’s condition worsened, Julie decided it was time to take him to the doctor.

“He was walking really gingerly and tenderly,” she said of her usually-energetic dog.

After leaving the pet hospital with a clean bill of health, both owner and veterinarian scratching their heads, Julie took her beloved Turbo home to rest.

“By the time we got home, he had completely lost the use of his legs . . . in the morning he couldn’t move at all, so the doctor told me to go to the surgery center.”

An MRI later revealed Turbo had ruptured a disk and that fluid had begun to collect around his spine. Doctors recommended the dog go into surgery immediately.

“I said ‘go ahead—do it,'” Stern Fukuhara said of the costly procedure.

Even when the pet hospital gave her a jaw-dropping estimate of the cost beforehand, she had no reservations when it came to saving the life of her dog.

“I remember . . . in the back of my mind I was really relieved I had the health insurance,” she said. “I submitted the claim and they sent me a check right away.”

Julie said she received a reimbursement check from Pets Best Insurance before her credit card statement (which she used to cover the expense) even arrived in her mailbox.

“This would have been a really bad time to deal with more expense,” Julie said. “If we didn’t have insurance I would be so upset. I feel so lucky that I made that decision when he was a puppy.”

If you have a dog then it makes common sense to take out dog insurance, UK dog owners can end up paying an absolute fortune in vet bills if their pet has an accident or develops a chronic condition of some kind. Most pet insurance policies will not cover any existing conditions, and as a general rule the insurance will not cover you for the necessary vaccination jabs and annual boosters that your dog will need.

As with any kind of insurance it is always a good idea to shop around and get several quotations before you sign up. You should be sure to check with insurers what exclusions, i.e., what things may not be covered by the policy before you sign a contract. Most pet owners are perceived as caring people, something that the insurance companies will have noticed and so there are probably almost as many different dog insurance schemes in the country as there are dogs.

Supermarket giants such as Sainsbury’s now sell insurance for dogs, but again it is not a good idea to get the first insurance policy you look at, there is a lot of choice around and you should look until you find something that fits both your budget and your dog’s needs. There are some things that you need to look out for when you are buying dog insurance, UK insurers that do offer pet insurance may do so on a yearly basis, which means that if your dog contracts an illness while on the first policy, when you come to the renewal, you may not be covered for that condition.

Pet insurance in the UK varies by the type of animal you want to insure, for example cat insurance in the UK is usually cheaper than an insurance policy for dogs. You want as much cover as you can get for your money, just like everything else in a credit crunch, vet bills are rising all the time and unless you have dog insurance, UK costs soon mount up. If your dog is involved in a road accident and you have not taken out insurance then it could cost you hundreds of pounds to get things put right, X-rays and other specialist vet treatments are very expensive.

It is worth undertaking some research online and perhaps to look at one of the insurance comparison sites that are so popular now. These sites bring together a number of different companies and will give you an idea of what a policy might cost and what kinds of things you can expect for your money. As a general rule you should probably expect to pay somewhere between ?6 and ?10 a month for your dog insurance.

Shop around to see if you can find an insurance company that will cover your dog on an ongoing basis rather than your having to renew the policy every year. Your dog is probably in very good health and you may not see the need to take out a policy, but think hard before you decide not to insure. When you do take out a policy you’ll find it’s a lot cheaper to pay for dog insurance, UK vet bills can be ridiculously high.
