There was a constant flurry of activity during the last few days of our life in Korea. Mom was feverishly sorting through every item we had accumulated as a family and the keepsakes she acquired from her life before a husband and four kids. Whatever she decided to take for our new life in the United States had to fit in one of the large, multicolor plastic bags or the five over-sized suitcases. Everything else we had to leave behind, including our dogs Super and her pup Gome.

Super, who was named after Superman, was a wonderful mutt with an air of confidence and regality. She was gentle, smart and obedient, which were important traits to have for a dog to survive in Korea those days. She was only seven weeks old when dad brought her home to four overly excited kids and one disapproving wife. Mom reluctantly allowed her stay on the condition that she didn’t bark incessantly and didn’t destroy anything, a tall order for a puppy. Super not only kept to these guidelines, she earned the love and respect of my mom.

Super didn’t whine or bark unless to alert us of someone at the door. She didn’t chase small animals, drag in dead things or roll around in poop. She didn’t chew on shoes or the rice paper doors, and most importantly, she knew when to stay out of the way. When mom was busy with chores, Super sat in a corner until the housework was finished. She was one of the smartest dogs I have known and the only dog mom
ever loved.

Gome, which is a Korean word for bear, was the opposite of Super. He was big and furry and always ready to give you a wet, sloppy kiss. His thick clumsy paws abounded with energy he couldn’t control, and he was always in mom’s way. I think if it wasn’t for Super, Gome would have been gone before his first birthday.

Mom pushed off giving our dogs away until just a few days before she completely shut down the only home I remember in Korea. The day they came to take Super and Gome away, mom was standing on the front porch, her head down, with her right hand to her face and her left arm folded across her stomach. Her shoulders were heaving. When she looked up briefly, I could see that her face was soaked with tears. I don’t remember anyone else being there. I was too focused on mom and the dogs.

Super was in her favorite corner and Gome was curled up in the middle of the courtyard. Two sprightly guys came in carrying two leashes. One of the guys put a leash on Gome and led him out. Gome happily followed. The second guy put the leash on Super and had to tug her out of the corner. As he was pulling her across the courtyard, Super plopped her butt on the ground and her legs went limp. The guy had to drag her out. As the guy towed her away, she kept looking back at us, especially mom.  Her sharp eyes were furrowed and you could see the hurt and confusion on
her face.

Mom continued to keep her face down and was now sobbing uncontrollably. Super and Gome were gone. After Super, my mom has not opened her heart to
another dog.

Shortly after that day we were on a jumbo jet headed for America, a place as I was told, where the streets were lined with gold.

Boxer Dogs

Boxer Dogs were created in Germany; Boxer is a breed of stocky, short haired, medium size dog. There can be different kinds of color of a boxer; brindle, fawn with or without white markings. The boxer was bread from the English bulldog and is now part of the Molosser group, which used to be the Bullenbeisser which is now extinct. Boxers have broad yet short skulls, as well as a square muzzle with an under bit. They have very powerful jaws which allow them to hang on to their prey.

Boxers were first discovered at a dog show back in Munich in the year 1895. According the American Kennel Club, boxers dogs are now the sixth most popular dog in the United States for the second year in a row. They used to be the seventh most popular dog dating back from 2002. There are approximately 33,550 new dogs resisted every year.

Boxer Descriptions.

Boxer dogs have the most unique feature as the head is very distinctive. Boxers were originally a “docked and cropped” breed. This is somewhat banned in the United States as many animal rights groups as well as the general public have banned this technique. The do still cut their tails but the crop of the ears has died down. Adult boxer dogs can usually weight between 55 to 70 pounds. Adult’s males are usually a lot taller and weigh more than females. Males can be any where from 22 to 25 inches tall, as females are about 21 to 23 inches. Boxers will either be fawn colored or brindle colored or they can be almost all white. Many boxers have white patches throughout their bodies.

Boxers have extremely shot hair with shiny smooth coat that is extremely tight to their bodies. Boxers can only be bathed once or twice a month to since their hair is so short. Each boxer is unique in its own personal way. .

Oriental Shorthair is a feline breed that has occurred in Thailand, alongside the Siamese, for a long time as a self-colored cat and was brought over with other cats from the Orient to Britain in nineteenth century. Even as it was initially just considered a non-pointed version of the Siamese, the Oriental Shorthair gained formal recognition only in the twentieth century when, in the fifties, development of the cat was started through breeding with Abyssinians, Domestic Shorthairs, Russian Blues and Siamese. The cat was termed as ‘Foreign’ in United Kingdom and ‘Oriental’ in United States. It was another two decades before official recognition and championship status was given to the graceful cat. Today it is registered and recognized as a distinct entity in nearly all cat fancies around the world. Occasionally, as in the case of Cat Fanciers’ Association, it is coupled with its sister breed, the Oriental Longhair, into a single breed called simply the Oriental.

A svelte and finely built animal, the Oriental Shorthair is amongst the most attractive of all domestic cats. Its lithe, tubular body appears slender but is in fact quite well muscled. Head is wedge shaped with large pointed ears and slanted almond shaped eyes that occur in blue or green colors. Legs and tail are long. Coat of the Oriental Shorthair occurs in an amazing array of colors and patterns, with over three hundred variations recognized. Combinations include bi-color, parti-color, shaded, smoke, solid and tabby.

Like their longhair counterparts Oriental Shorthairs are prone to certain ailments in some of their lines. These include dental disorder, Amyloidosis of liver and dilated cardiomyopathy. These conditions are rare overall though and generally the cats live a long healthy life of fifteen years or more.

Oriental Shorthairs are very curious and intelligent. They like to explore everything and are not shy to open cabinets and get on top of cupboards to satisfy their natural inquisitiveness. They are athletic and maintain their active, playful lifestyle even as they age.
